BORA Blue Ocean Research Alliance®,a partnership between National Oceanography Centre and Subsea7, was shortlisted for The Green Collaboration Award at the Green Awards UK 2025. The awards ceremony took place at the Park Plaza London Riverbank on 10 September 2025.
BORA Blue Ocean Research Alliance® was established to improve access to critical ocean data needed to better understand climate change, biodiversity loss, and the health of marine ecosystems. By combining NOC’s scientific expertise with Subsea7’s offshore fleet and remotely operated vehicle (ROV) network, the Alliance is helping expand ocean observation and research at a global scale.
Key initiatives include the BORAbox®, a sensor system designed to collect Essential Ocean Variables (EOVs) such as pH and carbon dioxide during routine offshore operations. Data gathered through the programme are supporting climate research and improving understanding of ocean acidification.
The Alliance also leads the Eyes in the Ocean (EITO) project, which uses ROVs to capture imagery and observations of deep-sea marine life and habitats. The project contributes valuable biodiversity data from areas of the ocean that are rarely observed.
Since launching, BORA Blue Ocean Research Alliance® has received recognition for its contribution to sustainable ocean science, including winning the IMCA Sustainability Project of the Year Award 2024, and is endorsed by the UN Ocean Decade for Sustainable development.
Phil Bishop, Head of Commercial Development at the National Oceanography Centre, said:
“This nomination reflects the strength of what can be achieved when world-leading science and industry work hand in hand. Together through BORA Blue Ocean Research Alliance®, we are gaining knowledge from some of the more inaccessible parts of our ocean, enabling better decisions for the planet’s future.”
Liz James, Group Environmental Director at Subsea7, added:
“Collaboration is essential to improving our understanding of the ocean and supporting more sustainable decision making. Through BORA Blue Ocean Research Alliance®, we are combining industry capability with scientific expertise to help deliver meaningful environmental insight and long term impact.”
The Green Collaboration Award recognises partnerships that demonstrate strong cooperation in advancing environmental sustainability. The nomination highlights the growing importance of industry and science working together to address global ocean challenges.
